Functional Neurological Disorder Aotearoa
He aha te mea nui? He tangata.
What is the most important thing? It's people.
This is Aotearoa/New Zealand's first local comprehensive resource for
Functional Neurological Disorder patients, their whanau and their medics.
We choose the Kaku Kiwi, our nation's ceremonial kiwi feather cloak, to represent our mission. The beautiful garment shown here is held at Te Papa and may be as old as our young nation.
Our Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) community has been isolated, excluded and unsupported for too long. Our mission is to wrap our FND whanau in a cloak of warmth and protection, and in doing so restore ora/health and mana/dignity in our people. Every one of us is a golden kiwi worthy of love, care and respect.
Our Social agenda:
fellowship and support
to promote understanding and awareness
to share evidence based resources.
Our Political agenda:
to challenge misinformation and stigma
to grow local capacity and capability in the health workforce.
We seek the following specific outcomes:
an all-of-government evidence based definition of FND including:
the adoption of a trauma sensitive Standard of Care to be developed in partnership with our community
a Ministerial driven culture shift within the medical system and social services
inclusion of FND in the curricula of all medical training facilities
a universal treatment pathway for patients through the public health system
ACC to take a far greater role in the treatment of trauma related FND cases.
