Pacing is a strategy that has become popular in the treatment of chronic illness. Pacing is a way of managing your energy so that you don't over exert yourself and set off a symptom flare.
Look at the battery image to the left. You need to manage your energy like you are a battery. When you are effectively pacing yourself you will notice when your battery turns yellow, and you will stop and rest. If you keep going when you are in yellow and orange, it's likely that a few hours later your will end up in bed and in pain. A flare can last for days or weeks so its a good idea to try and avoid it.
FND will likely come and go in your life. Some days are better than others. It's important that you look after yourself on your good days too. It's common for FND patients to think "I feel great today" and decide to try to catch up on housework/gardening/parenting. The next day they end up in bed paralysed by pain, fatigue and neurological symptoms.
The way to avoid this is to keep an eye on your battery. When it starts to turn yellow, start winding down your activity. Start packing up and put the vacuum cleaner away. It doesn't matter if you only got half the house done.
Try not to let yourself get into orange territory. Never let yourself turn red.
Try breaking tasks down into smaller chunks and spread them out across the day. Take frequent breaks. This way you will hopefully avoid the boom/bust cycle of feeling great for a short time and then feeling terrible for a long time.
